Newark man pleads guilty to death of 2-year-old son

A Licking County man whose trial was supposed to start today in the methadone-overdose death of his 2-year-old son pleaded guilty instead.

Daniel Masters, 34, of Newark, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangering in the death of Benjamin Scott Masters.

Benjamin died March 10. Toxicology tests showed the boy died from ingesting methadone. Masters later admitted that he left the boy and his 1-year-old brother alone in the bathroom with an open bottle of the narcotic pain reliever. He returned a minute later to find Benjamin holding the bottle.

Sentencing was set for Sept. 4.

Jury convicts teen of killing another teen last year

A Rochester teenager was convicted today of slaying another teen last year.

State Supreme Court jurors acquitted De’Shequan L. Nathan, 17, of second-degree murder but convicted him of first-degree manslaughter in the shooting of Christopher Jones, 16, on Nov. 17, 2007.

Nathan, who unsuccessfully claimed he was drunk and was defending a friend in a fight, faces a mandatory prison term ranging from five years to 25 years when Justice Joseph D. Valentino sentences him Sept. 18, said Assistant District Attorney Avik Ganguly.

“We’re pleased with the verdict and the fact that the jury saw through the defendant’s claims that he was too drunk and was justified in this horrible act,” Ganguly said.

Jones was gunned down with one shot fired from a sawed-off .22-caliber rifle at Lexington Avenue and Pierpont Street. His brother, Mace Forbes, 24, was shot and wounded a couple of houses away from the same corner on July 15.

Jones and another teen got into a fist fight because the other teen was upset that his 13-year-old female cousin was hanging around with Jones, the prosecution said.

A friend of Jones pulled him away from the fight, but Jones ran back and landed another punch, according to testimony. Witnesses said Nathan, a friend of the teen with whom Jones fought, pulled out his rifle, raised it at Jones and fired, hitting Jones in the chest.

Unprotected Sex is The New Marriage

Is unprotected sex the new marriage? Thats what an Oakland teenager had to say that has the world in a buzz. He suggested that “among his friends and acquaintances, ditching the condoms for the pill, signifies taking monogamy to a new level.” I thought about it, I looked at all my relationships and well I’ve always gone by that logic as well. Once the condom comes off we are together, and she graduated to the title of wifey.

Some said it was ‘mindless hip-hop MTV” and not intelligent information, but I think its just how people think in urban America. Its not like this is the first backwards ideology we declare gospel there are plenty. We’ll have oral sex with out protection but won’t have intercourse without protection, so we’ll rather eat the disease… Yeah genius.

Now, I do believe that having unprotected sex does build a certain level of trust between partners that doesn’t come natural. Sex in general is a crap roll with your life, and a lot of men and women are gambling with their life, hoping they don’t come home with something that doesn’t go away. So how many times have you been married?

Officers arrested and charged Jermaine Canada, 27, with first-degree murder. A resident called 911 around 9 a.m. on Monday and reported seeing a man matching the description of the gunman in the 2600 block of W. Camelback Road, police said.



"The children were not with him at the time he was taken into custody, and that was a great concern for us," said Detective Stacie Derge with the Phoenix Police Department. "We didn't know where those kids were, but thankfully the kids are OK and they are in the custody of their mother."

The man had a brief conversation with the 7-Eleven clerk around 2:15 a.m. and then opened fire while holding the 2-year-old child, killing the 62-year-old clerk, officers said. He then walked out of the store at 2651 W. Glendale Ave. with the children, who did not appear to be injured, police said.

Young Women Are Bitter, Cant Embrace Womanhood

Jasmine Guy told Essence “I think our younger women have lost the ability to embrace their womanhood. There’s so much we try to do that’s against our nature, and it’s made us hard, cold, bitter and fearful.” The writer of the article said it was a great point to which “Whitley” added:

“…a lot of us are without partners, so we have to do double duty. We develop another part of ourselves to compensate for that. We haven’t been taught that those things that are innate in us-being maternal or being soft or being vulnerable-are good things. We’re taught to be strong and in that strength comes a certain dismissal of what we’re really feeling inside.”

I’m not sure where I stand on this one, on one hand I believe that women should be strong. Strong enough to support her man if needed. Yet she should still be a woman who is able to do things that are generally associated with being a woman, like cooking, cleaning, and all the things Donna Reed did.

At the same time a woman has to be strong because some men have never received home training. I can understand how a woman would develop a hard exterior shell with the way men, lie, cheat and break hearts all for the chance to stick themselves in a woman. A good looking woman can’t walk 20 steps without a man trying to bang them. I guess this is a yet another no win situation for the woman.
