4 held in robbery, burglary, kidnapping and rape spree

Tucson police arrested four teenagers Wednesday suspected in a string of violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping and rape.
All the incidents took place between Aug. 20 and Sept 24, police said.
The four arrested are Charles E. Flowers, 19; Tyrel Flowers, 17; Dion Bruner, 18; and Christopher L. Bacon, 17. All remain in the Pima County Jail on bond.
Together they face a total of 86 felony charges.
Tyrel Flowers, 17, is a member of the Bloods street gang, police said.
The men allegedly began what Tucson police Sgt. Fabian Pacheco and Lt. Rick Middleton called a "violent crime spree" by robbing the Cash Box Pawn Shop, 2014 S. Craycroft Road, on Aug. 20 and taking 16 handguns.
Pacheco said the four seemed emboldened by their success. They are charged with using the weapons to force their way into an apartment in the 7700 block of East Broadway at about 9:30 the next evening.
Residents told police several armed men entered the apartment, stole some property and took the occupants' vehicle.
On Aug. 27, at about 2:05 a.m., three men armed with handguns entered a Circle K at 8630 E. Golf Links Road and ordered the clerk to the floor. The three took cash from the register, dragged an automated teller machine outside and took money from it.
On Aug. 30 at 4:48 a.m., two men with handguns ordered a clerk at the Circle K at 7900 E. Broadway to the floor. They took cash from the register and "unsuccessfully attempted to pry open an ATM," Pacheco said.
Eleven minutes later, two men with guns pulled off another "takedown" robbery, forcing a clerk to the floor at a Circle K, 7475 E. 22nd St., and stealing money from the cash register. They failed to pry open an ATM.
Twenty-seven minutes later, another convenience store was robbed, police said. Two men with guns ordered a clerk to the floor at a Quik Mart at 1204 N. Alvernon Way. They took the money from that store's cash register and fled.
On Sept. 15, at about 1:20 a.m., a 23-year-old woman was carjacked by two men with handguns as she was getting out of her vehicle in the 1100 block of East Irvington Road.
Middleton said the men drove the woman to a desert area in the 2800 block of East Ajo Way, bound her, raped her and left her there as they fled in her car.
At about 1:35 a.m., three men wearing masks robbed a Circle K at 2750 N. Tucson Blvd.
At about 3:15 a.m.,, three men believed to have also robbed the Circle K robbed a Quik Mart at 1890 S. Mission Road, and at 3:50 a.m., also are believed to have robbed a Quik Mart at 1140 S. Fourth Ave.
Middleton said robbery, sexual assault and gang detectives worked on the case, which was helped by a tip from a 911 caller.
The suspects, under surveillance by police, were captured Sept. 24 by members of the Gang Tactical Unit, who pursued them on foot.
The men, who police said appeared to be attempting a robbery, ran from a Walgreens at Campbell Avenue and Irvington Road into a nearby apartment complex, where they were arrested.
According to online jail records and a jail clerk, Bacon is being held on 30 felony counts in the Pima County Jail on $100,000 bail. Bruner is being held on 20 felony counts and on $100,000 bail. Charles Flowers is being held on 30 felony counts and $100,000 bail and Tyrel Flowers is being held on six felony counts and $50,000 bail.

L.A. County sheriff's deputy charged in sexual torture of his wife, 2nd man

After tricking his wife into introducing him to her lover, a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy held the couple captive overnight at an Irvine apartment complex where he beat them, forced them to undress at knife point and ordered the woman to castrate her younger suitor, authorities alleged Wednesday.

Deputy Robert A. McClain then allegedly sodomized his wife and chopped off her hair with the knife, Orange County prosecutors said as they announced the filing of mayhem, torture and sexual assault charges against the 34-year-old ex-Marine, who faces a potential life sentence if convicted.

Prosecutors said the nine-hour ordeal began about 10 p.m. Sunday when McClain's wife told him she was leaving him for the younger man, whom she met while working in the leasing office of the apartment complex where he lives.

McClain then used a ruse to persuade his 31-year-old wife to introduce him to the 23-year-old man, said Susan Kang Schroeder, a spokeswoman for Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas.

After arriving at the young man's apartment, the deputy led the victims to a back kitchenette area in the nearby leasing office, where he started to argue with them and attack them, authorities said.


"McClain is accused of taking out a knife and forcing both victims to undress," according to the district attorney's statement. McClain, who also disrobed, "is accused of unsuccessfully ordering [his wife] to orally copulate both him and [the other man]," the statement added.

McClain then ordered his wife to castrate the younger man, and she "fearfully pretended to follow his instructions," the statement said. Schroeder said there were several puncture wounds in the man's groin area, including on his testicles.

After slashing the man's face with the knife, prosecutors said, McClain fled the scene, forcing his wife to go with him.

McClain then forcibly sodomized his wife, chopped off her hair with the knife, and ultimately drove her back to their Irvine home, prosecutors allege. About 5 a.m. Monday, the wife was able to leave the house with her four children and drive to a nearby hospital to get treatment, authorities said.

A cleaning crew discovered the young man in the leasing office about two hours later and called 911.

The young man's aunt, Nancy Smith, said she was stunned by what befell her nephew, an aspiring singer and songwriter who worked as a salesman at a Jos. A. Bank store in Orange County.

"I think my nephew came across pure evil," she said in a telephone interview from Florida. "It is hard to believe that there is that much anger and hate in someone."

The young man's father said earlier this week that he had warned his son about getting involved with a married woman, but that he didn't listen. The father, who visited his son in the hospital, said his son would require surgery for a "complete facial reconstruction."

Both the young man and McClain's wife remained hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon.

The woman's sister, who drove from Arizona to take care of the couple's children, said they had been married for years and she knew of no previous trouble between them.

"I have always seen him as a good person. So this is very hard to believe. He adores his children. They were his life," said the woman, who declined to provide her name.

McClain, who worked as a guard at the county jail in downtown Los Angeles, resigned from the Sheriff's Department Wednesday afternoon, said Steve Whitmore, a sheriff's spokesman. McClain had not had any disciplinary problems since graduating from the Sheriff's Academy in March, Whitmore said.

McClain suffered minor injuries in the attack and will be arraigned at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach when his medical treatment is completed, prosecutors said. He is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.

East 87th Street arson suspect Antun Lewis has violent past

CLEVELAND -- The man accused of starting Cleveland's deadliest house fire is a dope peddler with a quick, violent temper that explodes so often that even his fellow prison inmates had reason to fear.

Authorities spoke only sparingly about Antun Lewis, 24, today after a federal grand jury indicted him on a charge of arson resulting in nine deaths in connection with the East 87th Street fire on May 21, 2005.

But records and interviews depict a man who used intimidation and violence to make a name for himself in the neighborhood near his home on East 84th Street, which was about a half-mile from where the fire was set

Lewis has a strong, controlling personality that drew weaker people to him as he sold cocaine in East Side neighborhoods, according to officials who tracked his criminal career.

Foes who crossed him ended up bloodied, no matter on the street or behind bars. He pummeled an inmate in a protective security unit of the Cuyahoga County Jail in 2005 and beat up another inmate at a state prison last year.

Both needed medical attention.


On the street, prostitutes and other cohorts looked out for him to stay in his good graces, officials said.

"He was a player," said U.S. Attorney Bill Edwards. "People in those neighborhoods were afraid of him."

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors would not discuss a motive for the fire or whether Lewis was tied to anyone in the home. At a news conference, Edwards said he didn't know whether Lewis had dated one of the women there.

Lewis' sister said he briefly lived in the house on East 87th Street. Domaneek Lewis said her brother adored the children who died there.

The Lewis family called the charges preposterous.

Domaneek Lewis said her brother is a drug dealer, not a killer. Investigators ran out of leads so they pinned the crime on her brother because of his criminal past, she said.

"My brother had nothing to do with this," she said. "Nobody else is available to be blamed."

Lewis' cousin, Aaron Ward, also questioned the charges. He said his cousin wouldn't harm anyone in the home because Lewis was close to all of them.

"Everybody was like family to him," Ward said. "He is an innocent man."

But Lewis has been found guilty many times. He began his tour of Cuyahoga County courtrooms in 2003, when he was charged with selling drugs near a school, possessing criminal tools, stealing a car and resisting arrest. A judge sentenced him to six months in prison.

Within a few months of leaving prison, he was charged with failing to comply with a police order.

While awaiting trial on the charge, Lewis was racked up several more arrests.

He was accused of selling drugs and scheduled for trial May 5 in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. He never showed up, and police were ordered to find him.

Lewis was arrested a week after the East 87th Street fire, partly for his own protection. Rumors swirled in the neighborhood that Lewis poured the gas and lit the match that started the blaze.

Neighbors wanted justice, and the man who had once ruled with fear found solace in a jail cell, according to records and interviews.

While he was behind bars at the County Jail, Lewis attacked a 38-year-old inmate in the protective security unit June 16, 2005, a fight that required several guards to claw Lewis away from the other man.

Lewis was convicted of aggravated assault in the jail beating, as well as failure to comply, drug trafficking and a weapons charge. He was shipped off to prison for 16 months, going to the Belmont Correctional Institution.

Trouble soon followed him south.

Last year, prison officials said Lewis pummeled a 23-year-old robber from Stark County. That fight prompted state officials to ship Lewis to the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville, home to some of the state's most violent inmates.

And now with the indictment, people outside prison walls are focusing on Lewis and asking how someone could have set a fire that took so many lives.

"This goes way beyond a crime," said Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath. "This is tragic."

'Another family is hurting' after drive-by shooting suspect commits suicide in standoff

GRAND RAPIDS — After the drive-by murder of a 16-year-old boy he did not know, Kyle Keenan — alone and on the lam — made a phone call to relatives talking about heaven and suicide.

"He was asking the family would he still go to heaven if he committed suicide. We told him, 'Don't kill yourself, boy,'" said his uncle, Larry Keenan.

Tuesday afternoon Larry Keenan recalled those words moments after he was shattered to hear from police that his 21-year-old nephew shot himself in a hotel room as armed police in riot gear closed in.

Grand Rapids police had been seeking Keenan for four days.

Tuesday afternoon they received a tip that the younger Keenan was in a room at the America's Best Inns & Suites on 28th Street near Buchanan Avenue, so they and Wyoming police surrounded the Southwest Side hotel.


As police approached, two men tried to flee from separate exits. An officer spotted a weapon, yelled "gun" and the suspects rushed back inside.


Kyle KeenanAt one point police heard a single gun shot. They captured Keenan's acquaintance as he fled the hotel, Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belk said later.

It took about 40 minutes to evacuate the hotel before police peered inside to see Keenan disabled and on the ground. The captured acquaintance didn't tell police Keenan had shot himself, Belk said.

Police closed off eastbound 28th Street traffic at Buchanan during the evacuation.

One barefoot 53-year-old man wearing shorts and carrying a plastic bag walked along 28th Street.

"The police are serious about catching this man; they wouldn't even let me go back in and get my shoes," he said.

The man, who declined to identify himself, said he heard "a big boom" and came out of his room to investigate. "One of the guys was running down the hallway, and police told me to leave. He looked serious. I was scared," he said.

Keenan on Saturday was identified as a suspect in the drive-by shooting of Creston High School student David Witherspoon on Friday afternoon.

The 16-year-old was killed in a hail of gunfire as two people in a white Dodge Neon sprayed at least five shots into the crowd at Kalamazoo Avenue near Griggs Street SE. Police said Keenan was the gunman, and no motive was known.

Keenan's family huddled around a cruiser Tuesday afternoon, their grief obvious as police said Keenan died from a self-inflicted wound.

The elder Keenan walked past the cruisers and onto a vacant parking lot as two young women with tears streaming down their faces clung to a cell phone.

Keenan started punching his fist into a vacant garage, wailing "Why, why," and weeping.

He said his nephew started out as "a good kid, then he got caught up in this life."

"He went to Messiah Baptist Church, he was a good boy until this."

His grandmother used to daily drive him to and from his factory job on 28th Street SE. They didn't know his whereabouts after Friday but received a call from him asking about suicide and heaven.

In the call, Keenan talked to his grandmother about death. "He asked her could he still go to heaven if he committed suicide," Larry Keenan reported.

He said the family told the youth, "Don't kill yourself boy, don't do that."

The elder Keenan added, "What makes it so bad is he didn't even know that boy he shot."

He added that his nephew participated in a "stop the violence" seminar at Creston High School with WJNZ owner Robert S. Womack a couple years ago.

Chief Belk said even though witnesses identified Keenan as the shooter, there is no reason to feel good about the outcome.

"Another family is hurting," he pointed out.
