Teen & His Aunt Charged In Violent East Memphis Purse Snatching

MEMPHIS, TN -- Three people have been charged with robbery in the purse snatching that happened Monday, February 2, 2009, in the parking lot of “Whole Foods” on Poplar in East Memphis.

The victim told us she was loading groceries into her car when someone hit her in the head and started beating her. The attacker took off with her purse.

Police say 18 year-old Terrance Wright is the person accused of beating the victim and took her purse. According to investigators, 18 year-old Timothy Jones, and his 37 year-old aunt, Taketha Johnson, were caught on camera shopping with the victim’s credit card. Police say they used the credit card to go on a shopping spree at “Spin Street” and “RadioShack”. Police say they lifted one of Jones’ fingerprints from some merchandise at “RadioShack.”

Wright, Jones and Johnson were arrested Tuesday night at a home in Northaven.

Since the attack, "Whole Foods" has hired security to patrol its parking lot.

A check of court records shows that Wright was arrested last month for driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident. Taketha Johnson was charged last September with passing a bad check at Kroger. And last year Jones was charged several times with violating the vehicle registration law and also with driving on a suspended license.
