MEMPHIS, TN--A man charged twelve years ago with child abuse is now charged in the murder of a 19 month-old girl.
26 year-old Shamira Ivory has been charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect and 31 year-old Gary Hawkins has been charged with first degree murder in the death of Shamia Ivory.
On Wednesday, September 17, 2008, officers were called to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center emergency room to investigate the death of a toddler who arrived by ambulance from the 3300 block of Frayser View. The child died at the hospital at about 11:30 p.m. that night. Hospital officials called police when they saw bruises on the child’s body.
The Shelby County Medical Examiner ruled the child’s death a homicide as a result of multiple blunt force trauma.
Police say they questioned both Ivory and Hawkins. Officers say the mother went to the store and left the baby alone with Hawkins after the baby continued to scream during her feeding time.
Hawkins was charged in 1996 with child abuse after a six month-old baby in his care ended up with a broken leg and ribs.
