A teenager shot a man to death over a necklace, got nervous and told people that he only meant to shoot the man in the knee, police say.

The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, when a man wearing a mask walked up to Johnnie Williams III as he sat on the porch outside his apartment in the "Old Projects," an apartment complex on Orange Avenue.
Witnesses said several rounds were fired as the men fought over Williams' gold chain, according to arrest documents.
The shooter ran.
A woman who was driving by saw someone running from Williams' apartment. The man wore all black.
About a half-hour later, Williams showed up to play basketball at the Newtown Recreation Center. He seemed edgy, witnesses told police, and asked if anyone had heard that someone was shot that day.
He walked out talking on his cell phone and, when Williams returned, he told the basketball players that Williams was dead. He told friends at the rec center that "Johnny could not be dead" because only shot him in the knee, according to police reports.
Later, the woman who saw the gunman on the day of the shooting identified Williams in a photo lineup.
Williams surrendered at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night at the Sarasota County Jail. He is held without bail.
